Addt’l Details:
The Cardiothoracic (CT) Surgery Nurse Practitioner position provides all aspects of care to patients on Greenberg 4 Central, a fast paced 33-bed cardiac surgical step down unit. As the hospital’s primary cardiothoracic stepdown unit, the patient population consists of cardiac patients with a wide variety of diagnoses, surgeries, acuities, and lengths of stay. They are unit-based providers and their close proximity to the nurse’s station helps them to manage patient care issues and nursing questions in an expedited fashion and allows for immediate provider participation and response to clinical emergencies and codes. The Cardiothoracic surgery program is not supported by Resident MDs/Housestaff, therefore the provider coverage responsibilities are fully assumed by this dedicated NP team.

Occasionally, The CT NPs have responsibilities that extend beyond the 4C physical unit footprint including meeting with providers and patients in the L4 CT clinic, Periop/ORs on Greenberg 3, 14 South Amenities unit, and the emergency dept. There is a high throughput and much coordination to safely transition patient care from community to CT service and CT service to community. In addition to providing patient care, these advanced practice nurses help to support and educate clinical bedside nursing staff. They act as important liaisons to both cardiac medicine and surgery teams to effectively meet the needs of their patients.
The service does have fellows, they round with them and review plans with them. The fellows act as a resource, and generally provide plans directly from the attendings, however primary responsibility is operating room. The CT NP’s do not provide care for medicine and surgical boarders
